Philip Showalter Hench (1896-1965)

Awarded the Prize “for the discoveries relating to the hormones of the adrenal cortex, their structure and biological effects.”

American physiochemist. Hench was born on February 28, 1896 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated Bachelor of Arts from Lafayette College in 1916 and received his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1920. His entire career was almost spent at the Mayo Clinic, being later Head of its Department of Rheumatic Diseases and Professor of Medicine. Hench died on March 30, 1965 in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
