Fritz Albert Lipmann (1899-1986)

Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of co-enzyme A and its importance for intermediary metabolism.”

American biochemist. Lipmann was born on June 12, 1899 at Koenigsberg, Germany (now Kaliningrad, Russia). He was educated at the Universities of Koenigsberg, Berlin, and Munich. He took his M.D. degree in 1924 at Berlin and Ph.D. at Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in 1927. He worked at Kaiser Wilhelm Institute, Rockefeller Institute, Biological Institute of the Carlsberg Foundation, Cornell Medical School and the Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1949 he became professor at Harvard Medical School and in 1957 a Member and Professor of the Rockefeller Institute. Lipmann died on July 24, 1986 at Poughkeepsie, New York.
