
Thomas Huckle Weller (1915-2008)
Awarded the Prize “for the discovery of the ability of poliomyelitis viruses to grow in cultures of various types of tissue.”American physician and virologist. Weller was born on June 15, 1915 at Ann Arbor, Michigan. He graduated as A.B. at the University of Michigan in 1936 and was awarded the M.S. in 1938. In 1940 he took his M.D. at the Harvard Medical School. He was appointed Richard Pearson Strong Professor of Tropical Public Health and Head of the Department at the Harvard School of Public Health in 1954. Weller died on August 23, 2008 in Needham, Massachusetts.
