Werner Forssmann (1904-1979)

Awarded the Prize “for the discoveries concerning heart catheterization and pathological changes in the circulatory system.”

German surgeon. Forssmann was born in Berlin on August 29, 1904. In 1922, he went to the University of Berlin to study medicine, passing his State Examination in 1929. He worked at the University Medical Clinic, the Charité, Berlin, the City Hospital at Mainz, and the Rudolf Virchow Hospital in Berlin. In 1958 he became Chief of the Surgical Division of the Evangelical Hospital at Düsseldorf. Forssmann died on June 1, 1979 in Schopfheim, Germany.
