Sir William Ramsay (1852-1916)

Awarded the Prize “in recognition of his services in the discovery of the inert gaseous elements in air, his determination of their place in the periodic system.”

British chemist. Ramsay was born in Glasgow, Scotl on October 2, 1852. He studied at Glasgow University returned there as Assistant in 1872 at the Anderson College, after postgraduate work in chemistry at Tübingen, where he received his doctorate. He was appointed Professor of Chemistry at University College, Bristol in 1880 moved to a similar post at University College, London. Ramsey died in London on July 23, 1916.
