Victor Grignard (1871-1935)

Awarded the Prize “for the discovery of the so-called Grignard reagent, which in recent years has greatly advanced the progress of organic chemistry.”

French chemist. Grignard was born at Cherbourg in France on May 6, 1871. He was awarded the degree of D.Sc. at the University of Lyons in 1901. In 1910 he became Professor of Organic Chemistry at Nancy. In 1919 he became Professor of General Chemistry at Lyons. In 1921 he took an additional post as Director of lécole de Chimie Industrielle de Lyons, becoming a member of the University Council, in 1929 he became Dean of the Faculty of Sciences. He died on December 13, 1935 at Lyons.
