Alfred Werner (1866-1919)

Awarded the Prize “in recognition of his work on the linkage of atoms in molecules by which he has thrown new light on earlier investigations opened up new fields of research especially in inorganic chemistry.”

Swiss chemist. Werner was born at Mulhouse in France on December 12, 1866. In 1889 obtained there the Diploma in Technical Chemistry. In 1886 he attended lectures at the Federal Technical High School at Zurich. In 1890 he took his doctorate in the University of Zurich. From 1890 until 1891 he worked at the Collége de France. In 1892 he returned to Zurich as a lecturer in the Technical High School, in 1893 he was appointed Associate Professor in the University of Zurich in 1895 he became Professor of Chemistry. In 1895 he acquired Swiss nationality. On November 15, 1919 he died at Zurich.
