
Richard M. Willstatter (1872-1942)
Awarded the Prize “for his researches on plant pigments, especially chlorophyll.”German chemist. Willstatter was born on August 13, 1872 in Karlsruhe in Germany. He was educated at the University of Munich, receiving his Ph.D. in 1894. He was Professor of Chemistry in Zurich from 1905 to 1912, when he left to work in the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin was offered an Honorary Professorship at the University of Berlin. In 1916 he took up the Chemistry Chair at Munich. Willstatter passed the last three years of his life in Muroalto near Locarno, Switzerl died on August 3, 1942.
