
Arthur Harden (1865-1940)
Awarded the Prize “for investigations on the fermentation of sugar fermentative enzymes.”British biochemist. Harden was born in Manchester on October 12, 1865. He graduated in 1885 from Manchester University. In 1886 he was awarded the Dalton Scholarship in Chemistry worked at Erlangen. He returned to Manchester as a lecturer demonstrator, remained until 1897 when he was appointed as Chemist to the British Institute of Preventive Medicine. In 1907 he was appointed Head of the Biochemical Department, in 1912 he received the title of Emeritus Professor of Chemistry, University of London. Harden died on June 17, 1940 at Bourne End, Buckinghamshire.
