
Irving Langmuir (1881-1957)
Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries investigations in surface chemistry.”American chemist. Langmuir was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 31, 1881. He studied metallurgical engineering at the Columbia School of Mines. He then went on to do postgraduate work at G?ttingen, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1906. He joined the research laboratory of the General Electric Company (GEC), Schenectady, New York in 1909 where he remained until his retirement in 1950. Langmuir died on August 16, 1957 at Holmes, Massachusetts.
