
Walter Norman Haworth (1883-1950)
Awarded the Prize “for his investigations on carbohydrates vitamin C.”British chemist. Haworth was born in Chorley, Lancashire on March 19, 1883. He was admitted to Manchester University in 1903 did his postgraduate studies at Gottingen where, in 1910 he gained his Ph.D. In 1912 he joined the staff of St. Andrews University. He remained there until 1920 when, after five years at the University of Durham, he was appointed Mason Professor of Chemistry at Birmingham, where he remained until his retirement in 1948. Haworth died in Birmingham on March 19, 1950.
