
Artturi Ilmari Virtanen (1895-1973)
Awarded the Prize “for his research inventions in agricultural nutrition chemistry, especially for his fodder preservation method.”Finnish biochemist. Virtanen was born on January 15, 1895 in Helsinki, Finl. He was educated at the Classical Lyceum at Viipuri, Finl. He took his M.Sc. in 1916 obtained his D.Sc. in 1919, both at the University of Helsinki. He was appointed Professor of Biochemistry at the Finl Institute of Technology at Helsinki in 1931, at the University of Helsinki in 1939. In 1948 he became a member President of the State Academy of Science Arts in Finl. Virtanen died on November 11, 1973 in Helsinki, Finl.
