Wendell Meredith Stanley (1904-1971)

Awarded the Prize “for his preparation of enzymes virus proteins in a pure form.”

American biochemist. Stanley was born on August 16, 1904 at Ridgeville, Indiana. He graduated from Earlham College in 1926 gained Master of Science degree in 1927 Ph.D. in chemistry in 1929, both at the University of Illinois. In 1948, he was appointed Professor of Biochemistry Director of the Virus Laboratory, University of California, during 1948-1953 he was Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry, in 1958 he became Professor of Virology Chairman of the Department. Stanley died on June 15, 1971 at Salamanca, Spain.
