
Edwin Mattison McMillan (1907-1991)
Awarded the Prize “for his discoveries in the chemistry of the transuranium elements.”American nuclear physicist. McMillan was born on September 18, 1907 in Redondo Beach, California. He took his B.Sc. degree in 1928, his M.Sc. degree next year, both at the California Institute of Technology. In 1932 he received his Ph.D. at Princeton University. He was a member of the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. In 1946 he was appointed Professor in the University of California at Berkeley. He was a FeIlow of the American Academy of Arts Sciences, a member of the National Academy of Sciences. McMillan died on September 7, 1991 at El Cerrito, California.
