Cyril Norman Hinshelwood (1897-1967)

Awarded the Prize “for his researches into the mechanism of chemical reactions.”

British chemist. Hinshelwood was born on June 19, 1897 in London. He was educated at Westminster City School Oxford University where he gained his Master of Arts Doctor of Science degrees. He held successive fellowships at Balliol, Trinity, Exeter Colleges; he was a tutor of Trinity College from 1921 to 1937 in 1937 he became Dr. Lee’s Professor of Chemistry, University of Oxford. He became President of the Royal Society in 1955. Hinshelwood died on October 9, 1967 in London.
