Lord Alexer R. Todd (1907-1997)

Awarded the Prize “for his work on nucleotides nucleotide co-enzymes.”

British biochemist. Todd was born in Glasgow on October 2, 1907. He was educated at Allan Glen’s School Glasgow University, where he took his B.Sc. degree in 1928 obtained his Ph.D. in 1931 in the University of Frankfurt-on-Maine. He took his Ph.D. degree at Oxford University in 1933. In 1934 he joined the staff of Edinburgh in 1936 he moved to the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, became Reader in Biochemistry in the University of London in 1937. In 1938 he was appointed as Sir Samuel Hall Professor of Chemistry Director of the Chemical Laboratories of the University of Manchester in 1944, he accepted an appointment as Professor of Organic Chemistry at Cambridge University Fellow of Christ’s College. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society. Todd died on January 10, 1997 in Cambridge, United Kingdom.
