Pieter Zeeman (1865-1943)

Awarded the Prize “in recognition of the extraordinary service he rendered by the researches into the influence of magnetism upon radiation phenomena.”

Dutch physicist. Zeeman was born on May 25, 1865 at Zonnemair in the Netherls. Zeeman entered Leaden University in 1885 obtained his doctor’s degree in 1893, after which he left for F. Kohlrausch’s Institute at Strasbourg. In 1897 he was called to a lectureship at the University of Amsterdam, in 1900 came his appointment as Extraordinary Professor in 1908 he became Director of the Physics Laboratory. He was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences of Amsterdam in 1898. Zeeman died in Amsterdam in October 9, 1943.
