Lord Rayleigh (1842-1919)

Awarded the Prize “for his investigations of the densities of the most important gases for his discovery of argon in connection with these studies.”

British physicist. Lord Rayleigh (John William Strutt) was born at Langford Grove, Essex on November 12, 1842. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1865 remained at Cambridge. In 1879 he was appointed as Professor of Experimental Physics Head of the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge from 1887 to 1905 he was Professor of Natural Philosophy in the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Lord Rayleigh was the Chancellor of Cambridge University a Fellow of the Royal Society (1873) served as Secretary from 1885 to 1896, as President from 1905 to 1908. Lord Rayleigh died on June 30, 1919 at Witham, Essex.
