Albert Abraham Michelson (1852-1931)

Awarded the Prize “for his optical precision instruments the spectroscopic metrological investigations carried out with their aid.”

American physicist. Michelson was born at Strelno, Prussia (now Strzelno in Pol) on December 19, 1852. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1873. He was professor of physics at the Case School of Applied Science, Clevel Clark University, Massachusetts, in 1892 he became professor the Head of Department at the University of Chicago. He was President of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Academy of Sciences. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, the Royal Society of London. Michelson died in Pasadena, California on May 9, 1931.
