
William Lawrence Bragg (1890-1971)
Awarded the Prize “for his services in the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays.”British physicist. W. L. Bragg was born in Adelaide, Australia on March 31, 1890. He was educated at Adelaide University Cambridge University. In 1919 he was appointed Langworthy Professor of Physics at Manchester University. In 1937, he moved to the National Physical Laboratory as its director. In 1938, he became director of the Cavendish Laboratory Cavendish Professor of Physics. In 1953 Bragg went to the Royal Institution in London, where he became Fullerian Professor of Chemistry the Institution’s director. Bragg died in Ipswich, Engl on July 1, 1971.
