
Charles Glover Barkla (1877-1944)
Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of the characteristic Roentgen radiation of the elements.”British physicist. Barkla was born in Widnes in the northwest of England on June 7, 1877. After taking his s degree in 1899 at Liverpool, Barkla went to Trinity College, Cambridge and worked in the Cavendish Laboratory. In 1902 he returned to Liverpool and in 1909 became Wheatstone Professor in the University of London. From 1913 on ward he was Professor of Natural Philosophy at Edinburgh University. He was a member of the Royal Society. Barkla died in Edinbourg on October 23, 1944.
