Niels Henrik David Bohr (1885-1962)

Awarded the Prize “for his services in the investigation of the structure of atoms of the radiation emanating from them.”

Danish physicist. Niels Bohr was born in Copenhagen on October 7, 1885. He was educated at the University of Copenhagen where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1911. In 1916 he was appointed Professor of Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University, in 1920 became Director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics. In 1943 he went to Los Alamos, serving as a consultant on the atomic bomb project. He was President of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences, Chairman of the Danish Atomic Energy Commission a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in London. Niels Bohr died in Copenhagen on November 18, 1962.
