
Arthur Holly Compton (1892-1962)
Awarded the Prize “for his discovery of the effect named after him.”American physicist. Compton was born in Wooster, Ohio on September 10, 1892. He was educated at Wooster College Princeton, where he obtained his M.A. in 1914 his Ph.D. in 1916. In 1920 he was appointed Wayman Crow Professor of Physics Head of the Department of Physicsat Washington University. The main part of his career was spent at the University of Chicago where he served as Professor of Physics from 1923 to 1945. He returned to the University of Washington first as Chancellor then as Professor of Natural Philosophy. Compton died in Berkrley, California on March 15, 1962.
