James Chadwick (1891-1974)

Awarded the Prize “for the discovery of the neutron.”

British physicist. Chadwick was born in Cheshire, Engl on October 20, 1891. He entered the University of Manchester in 1908, where he graduated in 1911 gained his M.Sc. in 1913. From 1922 until 1935, he served as Assistant Director of Research at the Cavendish Laboratory. Then he was elected to the Lyon Jones Chair of Physics in the University of Liverpool. From 1943 to 1946 he stayed in America as head of the British mission to the Manhattan project. He returned to Cambridge in 1948 as Master of Gonville Caius College. He was Fellow of the Royal Society. Chadwick died in Cambridge on July 24, 1974.
