Ernest Orlo Lawrence (1901-1958)

Awarded the Prize “for the invention development of the cyclotron for results obtained with it, especially with regard to artificial radioactive elements.”

American physicist. Lawrence was born in Canton, South Dakota on August 8, 1901. He was educated at the universities of South Dakota, Minnesota, Chicago, Yale, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1925. He taught at Yale before moving in 1928 to the University of California at Berkeley. He was appointed professorship there in 1930 Director of the Radiation Laboratory in 1936. He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences. He died in Palo Alto in California on August 27, 1958.
