
Otto Stern (1888-1969)
Awarded the Prize “for his contribution to the development of the molecular ray method his discovery of the magnetic moment of the proton.”American physicist. Stern was born at Sorau (now in Pol) on February 17, 1888. He was educated at the University of Breslau where he obtained his doctorate in 1912. From 1921 to 1922 he was Associate Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Rostock, in 1923 becoming Professor of Physical Chemistry Director of the laboratory at the University of Hamburg. In 1933 he moved to the United States, being appointed Research Professor of Physics at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, becoming Professor Emeritus in 1945. Stern died at Berkeley, California on August 17, 1969.
