Patrick Maynard Stuart Blackett (1897-1974)

Awarded the Prize “for his development of the Wilson cloud chamber method, his discoveries therewith in the fields of nuclear physics cosmic radiation.”

British physicist. Blackett was born on November 18, 1897 in London. He was trained at the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth. After World War I, he entered Cambridge University graduated in 1921. He worked in the 1920s at the Cavendish Laboratory , in 1933 was appointed Professor of Physics at Birkback College, London. In 1937 he moved to Manchester. In 1953 he was appointed Head of the Physics Department of the Imperial College of Science Technology, London. In 1965 he was elected President of the Royal Society, London. Blackett died in London on July 13, 1974.
