Baroness Bertha Sophie Felicita von Suttner (1843-1914)

Awarded the Prize “for her real influence on the growth of the peace movement how in one of the most militaristic ries of Europe she had continued to cry, ‘Down with arms’.”

Austrian writer. Bertha von Suttner was born on June 9, 1843 in Prague, Czech. She was born into a wealthy family received her education at home. She served as Alfred Nobel’s secretary-housekeeper at his Paris residence was credited with influencing Nobel in the establishment of the Nobel Prize for Peace. She was an active leader in the peace movement, devoting a great part of her time, her energy, her writing to the cause of peace. Bertha von Suttner died on June 21, 1914 in Vienna.
