Auguste Marie Fran?ois Beernaert (1829-1912)

Awarded the Prize “for his holding a prominent position in the international movement for peace arbitration.”

Belgium politician. Beernaert was born on July 26, 1829 in Ostend, Belgium. Admitted to the University of Louvain in 1846, he took his doctorate in law in 1851 with the highest distinction. He was elected to the Belgian Chamber of Deputies in 1873 later served as minister of public works. He was prime minister minister of finance from 1884 to 1894. In 1895 he was elected president of the Chamber of Deputies. Beernaert died on October 6, 1912 at Lucerne, Switzerl.
