Tobias Michael Carel Asser (1838-1913)
Awarded the Prize “for he was one of the founders of the Institut de droit international (1873) has been one of its most active influential members; Asser has above all been a practical legal statesman. As a pioneer in the field of international legal relations, he has earned a reputation as one of the leaders in modern jurisprudence.”Dutch jurist. Asser was born on April 28, 1838 at Amsterdam, The Netherls. He studied law at the Athenaeum in Amsterdam, taking a doctor’s degree in 1860. He was a professor of commercial private international law at the University of Amsterdam from 1862 to 1893. He was also a founder of the Institute of International Law in 1873. Asser died on July 29, 1913 in The Hague.
