Elihu Root (1845-1937)

Awarded the Prize “for his contributions to the world peace movement responsibility of the final signing of twenty-four arbitration treaties.”

American statesman. Root was born on February 15, 1845 in Clinton, New York. He took his degree in law at New York University in 1867. At a later date he studied international law took his doctorate in 1894. For some years he practiced as an attorney in New York. He was appointed secretary of war secretary of state. He was elected to the Senate in 1909. He was the first president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Root died on February 7, 1937 in New York City.
