Henri La Fontaine (1854-1943)

Awarded the Prize “for he is the true leader of the popular peace movement in Europe. There is no one who has contributed more to the organization of peaceful internationalism, his outsting talent for administration has been invaluable to the peace movement.”

Belgian jurist. La Fontaine was born in Brussels on April 22, 1854. He studied law received his doctorate at the Free University registered as counsel with the Brussels Court of Appeal. He was vice-president of the Senate. In 1907 he became president of the International Peace Bureau. He was a member of the Belgian delegation to the Paris Peace Conference in 1919 a delegate to the First Assembly of the League of Nations in 1920-1921. La Fontaine died in Brussels on May 14, 1943.
