Nicholas Murray Butler (1862-1947)

Awarded the Prize “for his work for peace began at about some twenty-five years ago, it has been distinguished by tireless energy a zeal almost without parallel.”

American educator, at publicist. Butler was born on April 2, 1862 at Elizabeth, New Jersey. He was educated at Columbia College where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1882, a ’s degree in 1883, a doctorate in 1884. In1885, he accepted an appointment on the staff of the Department of Philosophy at Columbia College. He was named acting president of Columbia University in 1901 president in 1902. He was president of the American branch of International Conciliation, served as head of the section on international education communication of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Butler died on December 7, 1947, New York.
