
Carl von Ossietzky (1889-1938)
Awarded the Prize “in recognition of his contributions to peace.”German journalist pacifist. Ossietzky was born on October 3, 1889 at Hamburg, Germany. He left school at seventeen became a civil servant. Then he took journalism as his career, becoming an editor in Das Freie Volk. He created in Berlin the monthly Mitteilungsblatt accepted the post of the Berliner Volkszeitung. Later he was an editor of weekly Tagebuch Die Weltbuhne. He was secretary of the German Peace Society. In 1933, Ossietzky was apprehended at home by the secret police, sent to a Berlin prison, then to concentration camps. Ossietzky died on May 4, 1938 in Berlin.
