Carlos Saavedra Lamas (1878-1959)

Awarded the Prize “for his most valuable contribution in signing Argentine Antiwar Pact ending the Chaco War between Paraguay Bolivia.”

Argentine jurist statesman. Lamas was born on November 1, 1878 at Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was educated at Lacordaire College at the University of Buenos Aires where he received the Doctor of Laws degree in 1903. He taught at the National University of La Plata at the University of Buenos Aires, of which he was rector from 1941 to 1943. In 1915 he became Argentinian minister of justice of public education, from 1932 to 1938 he served as minister of foreign affairs. Lamas died on May 5, 1959 at Buenos Aires.
