Lord John Boyd Orr of Brechin (1880-1971)

Awarded the Prize “for his efforts to eliminate world hunger.”

British nutriologist. Orr was born on September 23, 1880 at Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotl. He began his medical studies at the University of Glasgow. In 1914 he was appointed director of the Institute of Animal Nutrition in Aberdeen. In 1919, he became director of the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen. In 1929 he founded the Imperial Bureau of Animal Nutrition. In 1945 he became a professor of agriculture at Aberdeen University. That same year he became director general of the Food Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Orr died on June 25, 1971 at Edzell, Angus.
