
Léon Jouhaux (1879-1954)
Awarded the Prize “for he has time after time thrown himself into the fight for peace against war, doing so in the International Federation of Trade Unions, in the International Labor Office, the League of Nations, the United Nations, the European Movement.”French labor movement leader. Jouhaux was born on July 1, 1879 in Paris. He entered a match factory at age of sixteen in 1909 he was appointed secretary general of the Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT; General Confederation of Labour). In 1919 he was chosen as one of the worker-representative members of the ILO’s Governing Body. In 1947 he was elected president of the French National Economic Council. Jouhaux died on April 28, 1954 in Paris.
