
Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjöld (1905-1961)
Awarded the Prize “in gratitude for all he did, for what he achieved, for what he fought for: to create peace goodwill among nations men.”Swedish economist diplomat. Hammarskjöld was born on July 29, 1905, Jonkoping, Sweden. He graduated at Uppsala University in 1925. He took a second degree at Uppsala in economics in 1928, a law degree in 1930, a doctoral degree in economics in 1934. In 1936 he entered the Swedish Ministry of Finance, from 1941 to 1948, he was chairman of the Board of the Swedish Riksbank. In 1951 he was appointed a consultative cabinet minister. In 1953 he assumed his post as Secretary-General in the United Nations Secretariat. Hammarskjöld died on September 18, 1961 near Ndola, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia).
