Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968)

Awarded the Prize “for he is the first person in the Western world to have shown us that a struggle can be waged without violence. He is the first to make the message of brotherly love a reality in the course of his struggle, he has brought this message to all men, to all nations races.”

American Baptist minister. King was born on January 15, 1929, Atlanta, Georgia. He received the B.A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College received his doctorate at Boston University in 1955. In 1954, he accepted the pastorale of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery. He was a member of the utive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. King was assassinated to death on April 4, 1968 at Memphis, Tennessee.
