
René Cassin (1887-1976)
Awarded the Prize “for his involvement in the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”French jurist. Cassin was born on October 5, 1887 in Bayonne, France. He graduated at the University of Aix-en-Provence in 1908 where, in 1914 he received the doctorate in juridical, economic, political sciences. He became a professor at Aix in 1916, at Lille in 1920 at Paris in 1926. In 1945, he became president of the Council of the National School of Administration. He was president of the Court of Arbitration at The Hague from 1950 to 1960 a member (1959-1965) president (1965-1968) of the European Court of Human Rights at Strasbourg. Cassin died on February 20, 1976 in Paris.
