Eisaku Sato (1901-1975)

Awarded the Prize “for his policies on nuclear weapons, which led to Japans signing of the Treaty on the Non-proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.”

Japanese politician. Sato was born on March 27, 1901 at Tabuse, Yamaguchi prefecture, Japan. After graduating with a degree in law from Tokyo Imperial University in 1924, Sato joined the Ministry of Railways, becoming the chief of its bureau of control in 1941 vice-minister for transportation in 1948. In the same year he joined the Liberal Party was elected in 1949 to the lower house of the Diet. In 1964 he was elected prime minister. Sato died on June 3, 1975 in Tokyo.
