Adolfo Pérez Esquivel (1931- )
Awarded the Prize “for he champions a solution of Argentina’s grievous problems that dispenses with the use of violence, is the spokesman of a revival of respect for human rights.”Argentine sculptor architect. Esquivel was born on November 26, 1931 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He graduated from the Argentine National School of Fine Arts in 1956 was appointed a professor there in 1968. He resigned his chair upon being chosen to lead Peace Justice as its Secretary-General in 1974. In 1977 he was imprisoned without cause being shown, during which time he was tortured. He was released in 1978.
