Alfonso García Robles (1911-1991)

Awarded the Prize “owing to his magnificent work in the disarmament negotiations of the United Nations; he has made such a notable contribution to the task of informing world opinion on the problems of armaments of arousing the acceptance by the general public of their joint responsibility for the train of events.”

Mexican diplomat. Robles was born on March 20, 1911 at Zamora, Mexico. After studying law he entered foreign service in 1939. From 1962 to 1964 he was Ambassador to Brazil, from 1964 to 1970 was State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1971 to 1975 he was Mexico’s permanent representative in the United Nations; in 1975-76 he was Foreign Minister, in 1977 he became the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the Committee on Disarmament. Robles died on September 2, 1991 in Mexico City.
