Desmond Mpilo Tutu (1931-2021)

Awarded the Prize “for attaching importance to Desmond Tutu’s role as a unifying leader figure in the campaign to resolve the problem of apartheid in South Africa; wishing to direct attention to the non-violent struggle for liberation to which Desmond Tutu belongs, a struggle in which black white South Africans unite to bring their ry out of conflict crisis.”

South African cleric. Tutu was born on October 7, 1931 Klerksdorp, South Africa. He received his B.A. at the University of South Africa in 1954, M.Th. at the University of London. He became Dean of Johannesburg in 1975, Bishop of Lesotho in 1976, General Secretary, South African Council of Churches in 1978, date Bishop of Johannesburg in 1985. Tutu died on December 26, 2021 in Cape Town, South Africa.
