Oscar Arias Sanchez (1940- )

Awarded the Prize “for he is the main architect of the peace plan, made an outsting contribution to the possible return of stability peace to a region long torn by strife civil war.”

Costa Rican statesman. Sanchez was born on September 13, 1940 at Heredia, Costa Rica. He studied economics at the University of Costa Rica earned a Ph.D. from the University of Essex in Engl. In 1972 he was appointed minister of planning. He was elected secretary-general of the National Liberation Party in 1979, in 1986 he won the general election to become president of Costa Rica.
