Nelson Mandela (1918-2013)
Awarded the Prize “for his work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.”South African politician. Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 at Umtata, Transkei, South Africa. He was educated at University College of Fort Hare the University of Witwatersrand and qualified in law in 1942. He joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 and was engaged in resistance against the ruling National Party’s apartheid policies after 1948. He went on trial for treason in 1956-1961. In 1962, he was jailed and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment with hard labor. In 1964 he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He was released in 1990 elected president of ANC in 1991 and president of South Africa in 1994. Mandela died on December 5, 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
