Frederik Willem de Klerk (1936-2021)
Awarded the Prize “for his work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.”South African statesman. de Klerk was born on March 18, 1936 at Johannesburg, South Africa. He graduated with a law degree from Potchefstroom University in 1958 then founded a law firm in Vereeniging in the Transvaal. In 1972 he was elected to Parliament as National Party member. He once took up a variety of offices in the cabinet. He was elected leader of the House of Assembly in 1986. In 1989, de Klerk was elected leader of the National Party soon afterward he was elected President of South Africa. F.W. de Klerk died on November 11, 2021 in Cape Town, South Africa.
