Shimon Peres (1923-2016)
Awarded the Prize “to honour a political act which called for great courage on both sides, which has opened up opportunities for a new development towards fraternity in the Middle East.”Israeli statesman. Peres was born on August 16, 1923 at Wolozyn, Poland (now Valozhyn, Byelorussia). He studied at the Ben Shemen Agricultural School. In 1948 he was appointed head of naval services. He took up a variety of important post in the Israeli cabinets including minister of foreign affairs and minister of defence. In 1977, he was elected chairman of the Labour Alignment. In 1984, he was elected Prime Minister. Peres died on September 28,2016 in Tel Aviv, Israel.
