Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo (1948- )

Awarded the Prize “for his work towards a just peaceful solution to the conflict in East Timor.”

East Timor social activist. Belo was born in Baucau, East Timor on February 3, 1948. He studied at the Salesian Novitiate in Lisbon, Portugal became a member of the Salesian Order. Then he studied at Portuguese Catholic University Pontifical Salesian University in Rome. In 1980, he was ordained a priest in 1983 he was appointed as Apostolic Administrator of the Dili Diocese. In 1988 he was ordained Bishop.
