Wangari Muta Maathai (1940-2011)

Awarded the Prize “for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy peace.”

Maathai was a Kenyan environmental political activist who was born in Nyeri, Kenya on 1st April 1940. In 1966, Maathai completed her studies at the University of Pittsburgh, earning a Master of Science in Biological Sciences, then gained her Doctor ate of Anatomy in University College of Nairobi. She became a Chair of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy in University College of Nairobi, Assistant Minister for Environment Natural Resources in the Government in Kenya. Maathai died in Nairobi, Kenya on September 25, 2011.
